In-Class Tutoring and Mentoring for Middle Schoolers

Los Ayudantes  places volunteer tutors in the classroom at middle schools in the Redwood City School District.  At the direction of teachers, we help students improve reading comprehension and knowledge and refine their writing skills.  We read with them, ask questions in order to go deeper into the context, and then tie the subject matter to their lives if possible.  But perhaps more importantly, we become trusted adults in the lives of the students we work with on a weekly basis.  We ask questions of the students related to the text (or perhaps unrelated), ask them about their other classes and grades, and encourage them in all areas to strive to be their best.  This is truly the most rewarding part of working with the students.  Many teachers explain that they wish the had the time in the day to get to know the students as we are able to do.
