In-Class Tutoring and Mentoring for Middle Schoolers (Now Online!)

Los Ayudantes is the only local, non-profit that places volunteer tutors in the classroom at middle schools in the Redwood City School District.   We work primarily with long-term English learners.

At the direction of teachers, we help students improve reading comprehension and knowledge and refine their writing skills.  We read with them, ask questions in order to go deeper into the context, and then tie the subject matter to their lives if possible.

But perhaps more importantly, we become trusted adults in the lives of the students we work with on a weekly basis.  After reading text and articles, we ask questions of the students related to the text (or perhaps unrelated), to get to know them better and be available as mentors.  This is truly the most rewarding part of working with the students.  Many teachers explain that they wish the had the time in the day to get to know the students as we are able to do.

Our Schools:   McKinley Institute of Technology and Kennedy Middle School (6th-8th)

McKinley Institute of Technology (MIT)
At MIT, all kids focus one hour a day, every day, on literacy, and this is where we come in.
In collaboration with the classroom teachers, we use stories, news articles, online sources, and texts to provide exposure to a broad range of literary styles and knowledge to help improve students' literacy.

Kennedy Middle School
At Kennedy, we have been working mostly with the English Language Learners designated students who are required to take an extra period of English.  As at MIT, we collaborate with the EL (English Language) instructor to help the students prepare for English language test they must take in order to test out of the EL program.
