Inspiring perseverance and confidence
The personal connection, extra practice, and strong belief in the ability of each student to master grade level English language skills inspire perseverance and confidence. For students who are trying to catch up to grade level proficiency in English, we celebrate the perseverance, incremental progress, and increased confidence that students show on the way to achieving their goals.
Supporting each student's desire to reach proficiency
Our annual surveys confirm what we hear from students and teachers throughout the school year: that Los Ayudantes are a real help to students, and that reading skills and confidence improve. All participants acknowledge that the cornerstones of the Los Ayudantes programs - the personal connections, the extra practice, the challenging material and the increased confidence that results - support each student's desire to catch up to grade level proficiency in English. We're always looking for ways we can improve what we do.
"Los Ayudantes has had a significant impact on student achievement. Los Ayudantes tutors work one-on-one with students or in small groups, which gives students a safe place to learn and allows tutors to tailor instruction to meet the students' individual needs" - Jennifer Knopf, Assistant Vice Principal, McKinley Institute of Technology
I really liked having you in my class every Tuesday. It was very fun working with you. You helped me a lot. I am glad you came because I have completed a lot of work we had to do" - Diana, a student at MIT
Thank you for helping me in spelling. It was fun because I can now spell better. And I can spell better longer words. I will miss you" - Alex, a student at MIT
"Los Ayudantes is a great group of volunteers who care about our future. They come alongside to help in ways a teacher cannot accomplish alone." - Milagro Velasco, Language Arts teacher at McKinley Institute of Technology
