We work through Curriculum & Testing
We have purchased reading curricula for use during the tutoring
sessions with guidance from the MIT English Language Development Resource
Teacher. The books needed for this program are unique in that they must
have high interest content to capture the attention of middle school
students. At the same time, they need to be written at a low reading level
to meet the students' current comprehension levels.
We have three categories to measure the
expected outcomes for students in our tutoring and mentoring
program:
English Language
Proficiency
1) Improved
reading comprehension
2) Expanded
English vocabulary
Literacy and Academic
Skills
1) Increased
appreciation and enjoyment of reading
2) Adoption of
constructive study skills
Mentoring and Youth
Development
1) Increased
academic and personal competency
2) Increased self-esteem and cultural pride
Field Trips
As part of our mentoring program we took the students
to Chinatown this year. The Chinese Cultural Foundation offers guided
tours with historical information. It has been useful for the students to
see that there are other kinds of immigrant populations and to learn about
them. We will continue to offer additional field trips as staffing and
funds permit.
